How Celebs Get The Red Carpet Look & How You Can Create It at Home

By Marcy Clark
As we approach the Oscars this weekend, seasoned celebs are already beginning their Red Carpet beauty routine for the big day. Lora Condon, a professional makeup artist and licensed esthetician, is a sought after beauty expert. As a 15 year veteran of the Beauty Industry, and the author of “Spa Wars: The Ugly Truth About the Beauty Industry,” Lora knows first-hand how many skilled hands it takes to get an A-List celeb like Reese Witherspoon or Michelle Williams Red Carpet Ready.

For the benefit of those of us with charity events, office parties and very special days of our own coming up (or maybe you are going to the Oscar’s too?!), Lora shares the celebs Red Carpet tricks of the trade:

Shimmering Skin – It all starts with soft, hydrated and glowing skin, and the best way to accomplish that is with a sugar scrub.  Phoenix Rising, All Natural Skin Care, has a healing sugar scrub that is marinated in luxurious natural oils that leave your skin, oh, so touchable. www.phoenixrisingskincare.com Next I recommend applying Body Bling. Lots of celebs use spray tans, but Christina Aguilera can tell you how that can go wrong. Scott Barnes, the make-up artist for JLO, developed Body Bling, the world famous instant tan and shimmer in one.  This cream looks beautiful on every skin type and can even be used as a blush.  It’s also incredible at fixing and blending self-tanning mistakes.  The best part is that it washes right off when you have to go back to reality. www.scottbarnes.com

Give Good Face – As the winner of the SPA WEEK award for Best Facial 3 times now, Lora knows what goes into a great facial. Her number one tip is to use hot moist towels rather than steam. Too much steam can make the skin irritated, red, more sensitive, flushed and dehydrated. This is the reason that people are often red and blotchy after a facial. Some estheticians say the reason for steaming the skin is to open the pores. This is false. Pores do not open or close like gills on our face. This is a lie that salespeople made up to sell products like toners. Steam or warm, moist heat is used to soften the dead skin cells and should not be used for more than three minutes far away from the skin in order to make the skin pliable enough for extractions. Warm, moist towels are the perfect way to achieve the same result without irritating the skin. Lora is also a Reiki Master and very practiced with her hands so she know how to make every facial relaxing and healing overall, even if extractions are required. If your facial isn’t at least somewhat relaxing, go to someone else. Being relaxed means being beautiful. Lora recommends a facial about 2 or 3 days before a big event. www.makeupwithme.com

Lash Extensions – Lash Extensions are an easy way to look great 24/7 and a staple of Red Carpets, Film sets and Broadway Stages. Celebs love Lash extensions because they are like a mini eyelift and immediately make you look younger and fresher. Many of Lora’s clients noticed that it takes the precision of a skilled surgeon to properly apply individual lashes. They started calling her the “Lash Doctor” and the name really describes the technical ability needed for the perfect lash application. If you only try one Oscar Beauty Trend, this is one you don’t want to miss out on. If you can’t come see Lora in New York or New Jersey, then make sure to see another certified Xtreme Lash professional. www.thelashdr.com

Pearly Whites – White teeth project a youthful, healthy image. Most celebs go for professional whitening. Whiter Image has a great in-salon teeth whitening where you get about 6 shades whiter in 45 minutes. You won’t get fluorescent white which looks really strange, just pearly white. You can also do it in fifteen minute intervals which is great for those short on time, money or pain tolerance. For an At-Home solution Whiter Image’s Chic-Flic, is a rhinestone studded, teeth whitening pen and lip plumping gloss in a convenient dual ended brush that fits perfectly into any clutch.   www.whiterimage.com

Airbrush – Airbush makeup is what the pro’s use because it gives the most even and thorough coverage and hides imperfections. If you have steady hands and want the look at home I recommend investing in Stream Cosmetics as the best laymen’s airbrush system. It is very easy to use with three pressure settings so you don’t have to know the p.s.i. needed like professionals do. There is a ton of education provided to the consumer, which includes a DVD, online tutorials and distributors who will come to your house to help you. Yes, this is a company that has distributors and I loved the product so much, I became a distributor. They also have personal airbrush tanning systems that give the most beautiful color. www.streamcosmetics.com/lora

Red Carpet Workout – Lora’s friend Nikki of NikkiFitness is a dynamic trainer famous for her Red Carpet Runway workout and she shares her top tips: “My tip for red carpet arms is to do three sets in a row that work one muscle group, then do a cardio interval. Then move on to the other sets. For example I will do stains triceps presses, then bent kickbacks, then triceps push ups, then revolving cardio lunges with a kickback.” She calls that quick and effective set “Impressive Arms and Camera Kickbacks.” www.redcarpetrunway.com/shop/accessories/nikkifitness-red-carpet-runway-workout

Red Carpet Diet – Celebs know how to eat healthy and light the day of, and at least a few days before, a big event. The biggest trick is – DO EAT. Fainting and loud stomach rumbling aren’t sexy. Lora recommends lean protein with some non-bloating vegetables for even-keeled, sustainable energy. And whether you are at the Oscars or at your work event, avoid too many sugary drinks – they go down faster and get you drunk quicker. You don’t want to lose your cool when your boss congratulates you for your stellar sales numbers or become a sobbing mess when you accept your award for “Best Punctuality.”

A Jersey Girl’s Holiday Beauty Secrets – Gifts For Nearly Every Girl On your List

Beauty Shopping & Acquisitions Talent

Our good friend and contributor Lora Condon, the National Award winning New Jersey esthetician and “Lash Dr.” dished with us this week about what every true Jersey Girl (and there is one in all of us – even in swanky Manhattan) wants to wear and receive this holiday season. A real Jersey girl knows exactly what she wants and it usually includes some form of glitter, shimmer and glow! Fortunately, companies have caught on and now you can unleash your inner Jersey girl and have an over-the-top holiday with these must have gift items. Lora, who is also the author of the hilarious and jaw-dropping, tell-all book, Spa Wars – The Ugly Truth About the Beauty Industry, reveals the secrets to looking sexy, and glowing no matter where you live.

Start with soft, hydrated and glowing skin. The best way to accomplish this is with a sugar scrub.  Phoenix Rising, All Natural Skin Care, has a healing sugar scrub that is marinated in luxurious natural oils that leave your skin, oh, so touchable. www.phoenixrisingskincare.com

Jersey Girl’s love to be TAN! It doesn’t matter if it’s August or December, they want to be tan, and the darker the better. Maybe being tan in the middle of a blizzard is a good way to find them if their car slides into a snowbank? Girls want 2-3 layers of a spray tan and flourescent white teeth.

Whether you hail from Jersey, San Francisco or San Paulo, glowing white teeth are on everyone’s list.  Whiter Image’s Chic-Flic, is a rhinestone studded, teeth whitening pen and lip plumping gloss in a convenient dual-ended brush that fits perfectly into any clutch.  www.makeupwithme.com

Everyone loves the look of tousled, day at the Jersey shore hair, so Jersey’s own, celebrity hairstylist, Eric Alt, developed Bayside Ocean Spray, to give you Jersey shore hair without having to hit the beach.  The fresh ocean scent makes me feel like I really spent the day at the Jersey shore! www.ericaltsalon.com

Nothing gets your hair pumping like Big Sexy Hair’s, Root Pump Mousse.  If you plan a long night of fist pumping at the club, you can remain perfectly coiffed with a shot of Root Pump directly on the roots of wet hair before styling. www.sexyhair.com

If you really want to complete the Jersey look for the holiday, get some false lashes or lash extensions for a longer lasting effect.  Lora “The Lash Dr.,” is the preeminent Lash Extension specialist in the New York area, and her clients love giving the gift of Luscious Lashes to their nearest and dearest. www.thelashdr.com

Of course, the most important part of the Jersey look is confidence, so rock your glitter, shimmer and glow right through the middle of the holiday party. Fist-pumping optional… but a whole lot of fun!

What Makes The Best Facial in the Nation?

Beauty Talent

By Marcy Clark

Exciting news!!! Our favorite makeup artist, esthetician and hilariously truth-telling New Jersey author and spa owner Lora Condon has won for the 4th time in a row in the National SPA WEEK awards! This is her 3rd year winning best facial, and her 4th year winning Best Treatment. I wanted to know, what makes the best facial in the nation?!?

What Constitutes “The Best” Facial?

Two times a year Spa Week runs a national program where spas around the country offer customers spa treatments for only $50.  Customers then vote for their favorite spa in different categories and Lora Condon’s, Magic Hands Skin & Body Spa recently won for the 4th time and 3rd time in the category for Best Facial. Lora, The Beauty Buster, now shares her secrets on how to give the best facial and what customers should look for and expect while visiting the spa.  Lora will also reveal the number one mistake estheticians make during a facial.

  1. Choose An Esthetician with Advanced Knowledge – The more knowledge the esthetician has at her fingertips, the better result you’ll get from your facial.  Just like a college graduate won’t have the experience and knowledge of a CEO, the same goes for your facialist.  A quality esthetician will take a few classes every year to learn new techniques and stay on trend.
  2. Use Your Senses – A quality esthetician will use all five senses to send you to heaven and back in an hour. She should have a firm but gentle touch with massage as well as extractions. The products should smell good with essential oils as the natural fragrance not artificial perfume. One of the most important senses is actually hearing and listening to what the client asks for and give it to them if possible. If they have acne and want deep cleaning, focus on cleaning not massage. Talking during a facial is a “touchy” subject.  The client should determine how much talking goes on during a facial.  Conversation should be about the client’s skin, beauty needs and beauty goals.
  3. Educate the client – An educated client is the best client and many times it is the esthetician’s job to dispel beauty magazine or internet myths.  A great esthetician helps with homecare in a non-pushy way and show them the benefits of using professional products.
  4. Passion For The Job – You’re in luck if your esthetician actually owns the spa or has an incredible reputation aside from the spa.  Big name spas tend to hire people right out of school with no experience; basically because they’re cheap labor and they make their money on volume not returning clients.  If the esthetician is the owner or highly regarded, you’re more likely to be in good hands.

The biggest mistake
that estheticians make is over-steaming the skin. After three minutes, the skin starts to become irritated, red, more sensitive, flushed and dehydrated.  This is the reason that people are often red and blotchy after a facial.  Warm, moist towels are the perfect way to achieve the same result without irritating the skin.  Clients might miss the steam, but they sure won’t miss the blotchy, red patches.

BOOK REVIEW – Spa Wars: The Ugly Truth About The Beauty Industry by Lora Condon

Beauty Books Exploits Shopping & Acquisitions Talent

By Carolina Sanchez for Women’s Mafia

“Spa Wars” by Lora Condon is filled with hilarious true stories about the highs and lows of the Spa and Beauty Industry, with names sometimes-but-not-always-changed to protect the not so innocent. It is followed by tips by this illustrious professional makeup artist and three-time National Spa Week Award Winning Esthetician on the best products. You will also find the best insights for applying and combining beauty products like a pro, spa etiquette and recommendations to get the most out of your hard-earned spa dollars.

Lora’s account of how she came to write this Memoir-meets-Buyer-Beware are almost as hilarious as her true Spa horror stories. Lora made the attempt to write a book about her life back in 2002, following a Haitian Voodoo priest’s advice, but this did not become a reality when she considered the thought of re-living her life was just “too depressing.” Later, in 2006 she started writing a book called “Just Your Average Angry American.” The book revolved around things that bother people, including politics and stupidity. In it she also added her own stories from when she worked in the Spa industry. As she told people, such as her celebrity and news industry clients, what she was writing about, she became aware that what people really want to read is what happens in the spa and and behind the makeup counter when the doors are closed.

Spa Wars tells true stories about the Spa and Beauty Industry, each narrated by the author in a witty manner. Lora, also known as “The Beauty Buster” for her consumer advocating tendencies, has a clear mission with her debut book: increased quality, integrity and authenticity in the beauty industry and truth in advertising to protect clients and the companies trying to keep them.

Some highlights: learn about “Gay Trance” and much more about Makeup Counter Psychology, an entire chapter of “Beauty Bullshit” that will have you cleaning out your makeup bag, guides on the best products and “fixes” to make all kinds of cosmetic products work better for you.
