Kara Laricks Spring 2013 NYFW

Fashion Fashion Week Shopping & Acquisitions

By Jaja Nwokeabia

Kara Laricks distinctively genderless designs won her top prize on the first season of Fashion Star. For her much-anticipated debut Spring 2013 presentation, she stayed true to her design philosophy, unveiling a 15-piece collection rich in masculine elements, and starved for color. Perched on podiums inside a raw industrialspace on Pier 57, models in  black lipstick and slicked hair pulled back into frizzy ponytails  displayed conservative high necklines, loose fit shorts and midi-dresses. Although Laricks has cleary mastered an androgynous aesthetic, she still seemed to be struggling with incorporating femininity into her pieces. Some models seemed to drown in shapeless shift dresses and  baggy rompers. The collection could certainly have also done without a dowdy and bulky skirt-pant that cropped above the ankle. But the grade school teached-turned-designer did achieve a alluring balance with a few pieces. For example, a beautiful white organza maxi dress layered with a silk charmeuse slip lent a romantic touch. A tangerine collared dress in organza and silk added a much welcomed burst of color toLarick’s otherwise monochromatic choice of black, white and pale yellow. And one could just imagine the perfectly cut navy blue organza/silk playsuit on a Hollywood starlet. Clearly Laricks’ talent rests in having created a strong brand identity anchored by genderless garments, like the ones that made her a reality TV retail “fashion star.” But in the real world, there are no VIP retailer judges on stage critiquing garments and tweaking details to make them easier to digest for the mass market. This is Fashion Week and all training wheels are off. Perhaps, Laricks could have benefited from a friendly reminder that at the end of the day her menswear-influenced garments still must be wearable by women who also seek to embrace their feminine side, not hide it.

New York, NY. September 2011 – Once again, the Women’s Mafia and Marcy Clark are hosting an un-missable New York Fashion Week event. This September the Women’s Mafia Fashion Show will feature the winners of their signature “Are You Runway Ready” contest, in an exclusive show at Tela Design Studio in the Meatpacking District on September 9th, 2010 at 6pm.

The Women’s Mafia signature catwalk competition lionizes the best independent labels by featuring winning designers to an exclusive, high profile invite-only event attended by press, top stylists, celebrity designers and key members of New York’s Design cognoscenti.

The Spring/Summer 2011 Women’s Mafia Fashion Show will feature:

PRIESTESS NYC by Cody Ross, is a line celebrating directional fashion, artisanship, subversive tendencies, extravaganza and fun. His label already has a certifiably cool fan-base and cult-following including Natalie Portman, Juliette Lewis, Elly from La Roux and Björk and to name a few. He vigorously designs and curates PRIESTESS NYC – an avant-garde womenswear/unisex label (launched in 2008) that has tons of edge, sex-appeal and artistic “fabulosity.”  The PRIESTESS NYC atelier is located in the West Village, NYC.

PHUONG MY, a San Francisco based designer, will make her New York Fashion Week debut with the Women’s Mafia. Known for her exquisite hand-sewn work for private customers in California, she creates garments for women who love to look beautiful all the time. All her garments are delicately beautiful and designed to fit and perfect the body form. She loves to drape fabric to play with form and shape to express different ways of the silhouette.

DOMINIQUE AUXILLY taught herself to sew at the age of 16 while attending Fashion Industries High School in NYC, majoring in Fashion marketing. She then continued her studies in Fashion Marketing at L.I.M College in NYC while designing custom dresses at home. She gained a clientele by wearing her own designs to parties. Dominique Auxilly has been worn by Nicki Minaj, Angela Simmons, Dawn Richards, Rocsi, host of 106 and park and Def Jam recording artist, Electrick Red, and has been featured in various print and online magazines.

Guests of the event will enjoy Chocolate and Wine tastings by ChocoVin, a collaboration between two Women owned business – Luxx Chocolat and Winerium. The theme of the tastings will be “Edible Couture.” Our event hosts, Tela Design Studio, the home of Tela Beauty Organics (the 1st FDA certified organic hair and skincare line) by celebrity stylist Philip Pelusi, will provide coveted gift bags and exclusive perks for guests. Makeup for the show will be provided by Smashbox and the signature looks created by Makeup By Leora.

Meet Thalia Michel, one of our makeup artists for “Leather & Lace”. I have known her for years. She even showed me how to put on my make-up for prom. I think that was the first time I ever wore the stuff. Thalia is a woman who loves bright colors and is not afraid to show it. Her love for make-up began in high school and she has been freelancing for about ten years now. She is a MAC Certified Makeup Artist and Product Specialist. The Women’s Mafia Fashion Show at Bryant Park: “Leather & Lace”

Events Fashion Fashion Week Featured

The Women’s Mafia Fashion Show at the Bryant Park Hotel on Wednesday Feb. 17th was an experiment in controlled Chaos. As word had spread throughout the fashion community about the subversive and sexy 10pm show and private party across from the tents, the venue was almost completely filled before the event had officially began at 9pm. The anticipation and buzz was palpable in Cellar Bar as it was backstage.

Downstairs our talented hair and makeup teams worked at a relentless pace to create our signature “Rock-Chic-meets-bedroom-eyes” look. Headed by celebrity makeup artist Chris Lanston for makeup (artist to the stars such as Lady Gaga and Beyonce) and inventor and entrepreneur Jamey Nash of Latest-Additions on hair, we knew we were in good hands. While working the phones to make sure our Vogue, WWD and Bergdorf contacts made it into the packed venue, our stylist Engie Hassan, designer Alisha Trimble and I styled and re-fitted the lingerie looks on some fabulous new models that were replacing some last-minute no-shows. Miraculously, everything came together in time and every look found its muse.

The reviews are coming in and we are hearing great things. What do you think? Were you there? Continue reading
