Rules in fashion should not exist, but if there had to be one concept that everyone should stick to it would definitely be: always dress appropriately for where you are going and with who you want to be.

  1. Trying a pop of bright for the first time?  Start with a top; a blazer is the easiest way.  However, don’t try too much too soon.  Begin with a color you already love so that you feel comfortable, but make it one or two tones brighter than normal.  You can keep it simple by combining it with a basic tank or tee in colors such as white, black, brown, or navy.
  2. When you’re ready to try more make sure to mix up the colors.  Do not do a mono colored outfit like wearing all yellow.  Not everyone can pull of Big Bird.  A way to successfully do this for work would be a fuchsia blazer, neutral pants, and green pumps.  If you want to have more fun with mixing colors try a yellow dress with hot pink tights or an orange top with cobalt blue pants.
  3. Stay away from bright make up and bright clothing all in one look.  That should be left for editorials.
  4. Make sure that the color(s) you are wearing work with your skin tone.  Yellow is tricky.  Usually cobalt blue works for all skin tones.
  5. Accessories are great for this trend.  You can use them to tone down the look a bit by using wood and gold pieces.  Or if you are a full out fashionista go for the neon accessories to compliment the bright outfit.  Some great accessories for this are bags, necklaces, and watches.  The best investment piece for brights is scarves.  So if you are going to start purchasing for this trend, start there! They make a flawless transition from spring to summer.

Remember, this new trend is not the retro 80’s neon we used to know.  It is more grown up with a soft and feminine touch.

Dress Like A Princess: Royal Fashion Stylist Engie Hassan Shares Her Sartorial Wisdom With The Masses

Design Fashion Shopping & Acquisitions Street Style Talent

Fashion Stylist Engie Hassan dresses some of the most glamorous women and men in the world. Engie has styled and personally shopped for royalty such as Princess Ameerah Al Taweel, celebrities such as Miranda Kerr, Lady Gaga and Kelly Choi, as well as a bevy of editors and models during Fashion’s key happenings including Mercedes Benz fashion week and The Met Gala. An alum Vogue, Paris Vogue, Teen Vogue and Numero, Engie is no stranger to glamorous clientele and the challenging work that comes with it.

As it is Engie’s work with Royalty that always inspires the most fascination and questions, Engie is generously sharing her sartorial insights on dressing Royalty and how all women can apply this wisdom in building their own closets.

What is the best part of dressing a client like Princess Ameerah?

We grow up believing that we are princesses and dress up like them. I grew up watching my mother dress like princess Diana; she was my style icon.  So now being able to dress a real life princess is a surreal experience.  It is an amazing feeling; I feel privileged and simply honored. She is part of so many different important projects and touches so many lives. She is the face of a country. I get to put my concept and theory of fashion on an amazingly influential person. But most of all, the princess is a sweet person and I’m thankful to work with people like her.

Who would you say are the best-dressed royals of recent times?

  1. Princess Diana
  2. Princess Grace Kelly of Monaco
  3. Princess Ameerah Al Taweel of Saudi Arabia
  4. Princess Charlotte of Monaco
  5. Queen Rania of Jordan

What current trends can be incorporated into elegant Royal Style?

Wearing sheer tops can be given a royal touch by adding a brooch, pearls, or the proper accessories. Most looks for royalty only need one, or at max two, bold statement pieces, such as a precious stone bracelet. Of course, always wear proper undergarments.

Instead of wearing a jacquard blazer with jeans, for Royal styling I would switch out the jeans for very well-tailored pants or a skirt for the princess.

Princess Grace Kelly of Monaco

Evening wear should be updated with more glamour by making it more conservative. If the dress were to be strapless then it should be a sheer blush pink or a royal purple, and definitely no brights. It should also be covered up with a silk scarf around the neck.

How can women without royal titles emulate our favorite Royal styles?

You can add elegance to our everyday looks with accessories such as shawls or short gloves. A lot of styles are moving toward femme chic, which is very royal. These styles include feminine prints and fabrics. Also softer palettes and more conservative silhouettes embody the timeless style that Royals need to showcase.

What are the most challenging aspects of dressing royalty?

The time constraints always offer a good challenge My Royal clients are only in the United States for a limited amount of time each visit, so things have to be done efficiently and without mistakes.

Fashion-wise, it is making sure that she is always a trendsetter, but that the trends are making her more of an icon and are appropriate for all of the different roles she plays, such as being a part of an important event such as the Clinton Global Initiative. We have to make sure that the style, cut and even the color are always proper and relevant for each event.

TALENT Q&A with Patricia Parenti: Stylist and Owner of Tender Gloving Care

Fashion Shopping & Acquisitions Street Style Talent

By Carolina Sanchez for Women’s Mafia

Patricia Parenti, Fashion Stylist and owner of Tender Gloving Care, started her fashion career in New York City as an accessories buyer and department manager for “The New Store” on 7th Avenue. She was also a freelance merchandiser for Omanti, a manufacturer for women’s blouses and leather apparel. Later, she went on to be a shoe buyer and department manager for Castaneda and eventually designed an exclusive line of women’s dress shoes.

Patricia has also been an assistant designer and sales representative for Head Dress hair accessories. Patricia’s versatile talents led her to fashion styling for video and stage in the 90’s, including working as an assistant designer for Rosemary Ponzo on the play “Ellison and Eden”.

Patricia’s energy and enthusiasm helped her represent the glove line “Designs by Gail”. When Gail relocated she ended up having a lot of clients and no merchandise, which led Patricia to start designing her own gloves and develop her creative side. Later on she was influenced by a man named Leo Shore, whom has been in the glove business since WWII. Patricia would visit him and his vintage glove collection. He told her all about the manufacturing business and has supported her projects ever since.

Tender Gloving Care vintage gloves have been featured in Lucky magazine and various blogs. Let’s talk to Patricia herself and find out more about her amazing line!

WM: You have had numerous roles in the fashion industry and for some time one of them included designing different types of accessories. What inspired you to focus on gloves?

PP: This is because I inherited seven 50 pound boxes of dead stock vintage gloves from a 95 year old man who had stores called “THE GLOVE SHOPS” all around the country until the mid 1980’s. I used to be into Rockabilly music and dancing and I got into wearing vintage gloves with my party dresses and never stopped wearing them because I loved the way they looked on my hands so much.

WM: What would you say is the glove “trend” right now?

PP: Wrist length styles as shown on the Fall 2011 Louis Vuitton runway shows. This is because the “Mod 60’s” styles in fashion are coming back in style. Elbow length gloves are still in style also. I have both styles in stock at Tender Gloving Care’s Vintage Collection.

WM: What is the philosophy of Tender Gloving Care?

PP: To have decorated leather gloves to wear with your winter coat instead of plain one’s like everyone wears. I cater to women who enjoy being a little glitzy. My feelings are that the beautiful gloves made in the 50’s and 60’s should be kept alive by women of all ages wearing them and not thrown in landfills (I’m a huge believer in recycling).

WM: What are the materials featured in your gloves?

PP: My main collection is brown cashmere lined leather embellished with studs, stones and chains. The vintage collection is either hand stitched cotton from the 1950’s, or nylon from the 1960’s.

WM: You’re also a stylist. Tell us about your personal style. What makes your style unique and where do you get inspired?

PP: Vintage inspired, tailored, funky or trendy is the way I dress all the time and always accessorized.  I’m unique because I’m always dressed coordinated from head to toe, whereas most people dress like a mess nowadays because they put together many layers of nothing that goes together. Most of my inspiration comes from old fashioned magazines and movies, but also runway shows from America and Europe. Sometimes I get inspired by trendy store mannequins from H & M and Forever 21.

WM: What can the Women’s Mafia make happen for you?

PP: I feel they can help me get noticed in other markets rather than just New York Metro area, therefore leading me to sell both my leather and vintage line in more towns and cities across the world.
