Review: Tara Roscioli’s Meals 2 Glo 5 Day Cleanse

I had the immense privilege this January of trying Tara Roscioli’s fantastic Meals 2 Glo 5 day cleanse by her company Highway 2 Well. I was really impressed with the cleanse. How it works is that Tara drops off one or two days of meals at a time, in the most pretty pink insulated bags. I loved that it was real, whole, organic foods, instead of just juices. I have been vegetarian for almost 20 years, and grew up with a nutritionist mother, so I do know how to eat well, but anyone can get into a health rut when they are busy.  I was excited to try something new and focus a whole week on my health.

I felt that the Meals 2 Glo cleanse was really well thought-out and I learned a lot about my cravings and needs for food in the process. There were 3 meals and 2 snacks each day, meals and snacks were simple. Breakfast was sometimes Berry Overnight Oats, Pineapple Cucumber Mint Juice with a homemade Oat and fruit GLO bar, snacks included Baked Apples, Homemade Trailmix, Veggie Crudite with Hummus, Tara’s homemade Kale Chips, and Edamame with Pink Sea Salt. Lunches included the GLO-2 Kale Salad (one of my favorites!), Beet and Avocado Salad, Zucchini “Pasta” Pesto (so delicious!). Dinners might be Indian Lentil Stew, Sauteed Broccolini with Brown Rice, Sweet Potato Stew with Indian Spices and Chinese Stir Fried Quinoa with (really awesome). I learned that my eyes are definitely bigger than my stomach. And that I can get full on just a simple meal of vegetable stew, especially if I ate protein or fat earlier in the day. I was Vegan for a year, so this shouldn’t have surprised me – but it did!

Since the cleanse I am trying to keep up with having much less gluten and cheese especially. I get so busy and hadn’t realized how much they had become my go-to foods with some veggies or beans on the side. I also realized that even though I try to minimize sugar, I did get STRONG sugar cravings when I couldn’t have it in my morning chai tea or had to fight the urge to eat a piece of chocolate at night. It was also great to see that I could exercise and keep my energy levels up while cleansing, as a previous diet I had tried years ago I got whoozy when I went to the gym. Eating lots of smaller meals helped with that.
In the end I lost about 2 or 3 pounds on the cleanse, which is pretty awesome for 5 days, and I am keeping up with it now by having smaller meals and cooking more “real food” at home instead of ordering Seamlessweb.

I highly recommend a cleanse with Tara! She makes herself available to you for questions and advice and you can profoundly change your food habits in less than a week because the meals you eat are from real foods and you will be motivated to make better choices at the grocery store so that you can keep feeling awesome. We asked Tara a few more questions to learn more about the methods behind her super effective cleanse:

Women’s Mafia: What is your philosophy with the Meals 2 Glo cleanse? Why is it so effective at helping people lose weight?

Tara Roscioli: My philosophy in creating Meals 2 GLO was to show my clients how eating clean whole foods would allow them to lose excess weight, curb their sugar cravings and help to restore their energy. Gimmicks and fad diets simply aren’t necessary and while they may work in the short term, they simply aren’t sustainable. I created this anti-inflammatory program to help clients reduce toxicity in their body. The foods are easy to digest and allow the body to work overtime to reduce the sludge that has accumulated in their system due to poor eating habits. Clients have reported anywhere from a 3.5 to an 11 pound weight loss in just 5 days and while some of this is water, it certainly is a great jump start to a healthier way of eating. Clients have also reported less bloat or digestive upset, improved sleep, fewer cravings for sugar, more energy and even an improvement in their skin (less acne or eczema). The best part is that this is a very sustainable way to eat!
WM: How do you eat on a normal basis? Are you vegan, organic, sugar-free and gluten free? Can you share some of your go-to foods/meals?
TR: I am a vegetarian since the age of 14 though I do eat some fish. Other than that, I don’t really eliminate any foods from my diet but I do limit dairy as I am prone to sinus infections and find that the dairy contributes to my congestion. Sugar is my downfall…it has been since I was a kid. I noticed that if I can go a few days without sugar, I can get over the hump and I do feel much better without it.
WM: What aspects of the cleanse do participants usually have the hardest time sticking with? Any tips?
TR: The hardest thing for most clients to get over is that day 2-3 when they start to feel the effects of the detox. Usually it’s just a headache as the sugar leaves the system but on the more severe side is some nausea. But after those first days, their energy starts to soar. My suggestion is to flush with water and get a massage if time permits as it will work the toxins out of the system.
WM: What cravings / habits are most of your clients trying to break? What do you think makes the biggest difference in long term health and weight loss?
TR: Most of my clients want to lose a bit of weight and break the sugar/alcohol cycle. They are in high stress careers and they turn to sugar/alcohol as a way of combating the stress. I get it-as a former lawyer, I did the same thing. I wouldn’t make time to eat regularly so I was forced to resort to bags of pretzels and swedish fish from the law firm vending machine. After a long commute home, I wouldn’t have energy to eat so I’d poor a glass of wine. The stress interrupted my sleep so I would have a second glass of wine. Vicious cycle!

I invited some Women’s Mafia insiders to join me and we had an unforgettable time strolling through the village, trying delicacies such as an authentic Italian Rice Ball while learning the history, culture and architecture of one of NYC’s favorite neighborhoods. I learned that FoodsOfNY created the Food Tour concept 15 years ago in New York and that founder Todd Lefkovic is considered the “Father” of the Food Tour industry, on the go dining experiences which can now can be found in many major US cities. Denise: Olivia, my daughter whose nick name is Pippi is the reason I started Pip’s Place.  This is for her and everyone like her who has to eat gluten free.
Women’s Mafia: What else makes Pip’s treats unique besides the gluten free aspect?
Denise: Pip’s treats are special because they are 100% certified gluten free but they taste like they aren’t.  Most of our recipes are my family recipes baked for generations not gluten free.  I spent 5 years trying to get them to taste like the past so Olivia could enjoy her favorites.

Women’s Mafia: How would you like Pip’s Place to evolve in the next 10 years?
Denise: I believe Pip’s Place will become a National company over the next 10 years.  We had 51,000 guests in our first location during the first 12 months.  I can only imagine how many people we could help enjoy great tasting, home made gluten free treats if we had a Pip’s in every major city!
Women’s Mafia: Describe your creations in 5 words.
Denise: special, heart-warming, passionate, community, joy
Women’s Mafia: Who/what influenced you the most to open up this bakery?
Denise: My husband and children were the driving force because the kids grew up having only home made treats.  My husband wanted me to find a new passion because our last child (Pip) was leaving for college and I needed to fill the void.  And, my friends, who loved what I baked and encouraged me to go for it.
Women’s Mafia: What aspect of this business do you enjoy most?
Denise: I enjoy 2 parts – first the kitchen.  The smells take me back to when my children were small or when I was a child and visited my nana’s house.  I also enjoy my customers.  I love the community that I have created – the stories, the encouragement and the relationships.
Women’s Mafia: Do you have any successful tips that Women’s Mafia members can learn from?
Denise: As a women starting a business after being a stay-at-home Mom for 22 years – don’t be afraid.  Follow the dream and don’t give up.  As a gluten free baker – don’t quit when you fail the first, second or fifth time.  You will get it – keep tweaking the recipe.
I would suggest that being gluten free isn’t a diet, it is a life style and being able to help so many people maintain their health and give them real, freshly baked treats is worth all the work.

More Wine at the Caffé

I entered Caffé e Vino simply to drop off photographs with my partner Luis Vaz (photographer) for the owner’s wife. Luis introduced me to Giuseppe who then asked us if we wanted a drink… The night was in the bag from there.

Our jackets were taken to coat check, wine was served and appetizers were ordered. Fresh soft bread with tomato spread and water was placed on the table. We ate fried calamari and zucchini and sipped wine.

Since we only stepped in to make a drop, having a full meal was not on my mind. Giuseppe asked us if we wanted to eat…what to do?? Having had a late lunch that day I knew I was not too hungry, but me giving up delicious Italian food is unheard of, never to be uttered aloud. I told him to make a light dish for me. A few minutes later we were met with linguine with Alfredo sauce topped with shrimp. Luis was not too happy because they served us both small plates. I got what I asked for, sorry buddy.

I thought that we were receiving exceptional treatment because my partner knew the owner, but it seemed to be given to all attendees of the restaurant, which is amazing, because we were given a lot of attention. The atmosphere was very warm, exposed brick and candlelight, always perfect for a second date. I say second because you do not want to start off with too much romance on the first date. Don’t scare him/her away just yet.

Back to the pasta which was great, the Alfredo sauce was different, nothing like I had before. It truly tasted homemade.

To end the meal off we were given homemade cheesecake and I opted for more wine instead of a latte. I left with a smile on my face and an overstuffed stomach. No room for complaint. We grabbed our coats and crossed the bridge to attend a party thrown by the Mayor.

Guests can do it all while listening to music, enjoying hot waffles and eating ice cream from Zsa’s Gourmet Ice Cream Truck!

Nomad is a hip new pop-up shop featuring the best modern, vintage and mid-century finds alongside original works and fresh designs from local jewelers and artisans. All of Nomad’s wares come from local independent designers and collectors, making it the perfect destination for the most thoughtful gift givers this Holiday Season.

Nomad is the collaboration of Tami Seymour and Elie-Anne Chevrier. Both have a combined passion for skillful design & craftsmanship, elegant simplicity and the art of reuse. Elie-Anne, formerly of the Museum world and currently owner of Modern, Vintage, Mid-Century, is a collector, mid-century connoisseur and all-around amazing treasure hunter. Tami is a designer turned stylist and photographer as well as the writer and photographer behind the popular blogs: helloseemore and Middle Diner. She has a never-ending obsession for creating and absorbing beautiful design in all its forms.

Featured Philadelphia Jewelry Designer J. Rudy Lewis is creating new work this season that is catching the eyes and being acquired by top stylists, celebrities and even Royalty. His “Victoria” cuff seems destined to appear on Charlotte Bronte’s arm – that is if Bronte was on her way to CBGB’s. His “Free Forms” collection explores the concept of art as jewelry throughout time -“pieces of jewelry have been found in ancient archaeological excavations all over the world.” Lewis is a student of the history of art, always observing and incorporating fragments of the past into his modern work. Like his “Five Journey’s” Cuff, hand forged and fabricated from sterling silver with 18k yellow gold detail set with natural rough rose cut diamonds, that looks to have just been found buried in the desert. With J. Rudy Lewis every piece tells a story.

A portion of sales at Nomad will be donated to the James Turrell project: Chestnut Hill Friends are building the first new meetinghouse in Philadelphia in 80 years as a spiritual home for their members and as an inviting place for visitors. Incorporating a Skyspace by world-renowned light artist James Turrell, which will be open regularly to the public, this environmentally-friendly 21st Century building and surrounding gardens and woods will not only accommodate the vibrant local Quaker community, but also offer people of all faiths a place to gather for quiet reflection, fellowship, education, and social action.
